One of the strangest stories in crypto is still not over.
Mt Gox was once the largest exchange for bitcoin. Then, in 2014, the exchange shut down its website and announced that hundreds of millions of dollars worth of customers’ bitcoins had been lost in a series of hackings that went unnoticed for several years.
CEO Mark Karpeles was arrested by Japanese authorities in 2015 on charges of embezzlement and serious breach of trust, but he was eventually acquitted of most charges and given a suspended sentence for falsifying data. Authorities have revealed charges against others in connection with the theft of bitcoins from Mt. Gox.
For investors who lost their crypto in the collapse, the massive jump in the price of bitcoin in the years following the Mt. Gox shutdown has made it possible for them to get back at least some of their original investment. A Website has been set up for the repayment process Says, “The base repayment, intermediate repayment and initial lump sum repayment are currently scheduled to be made by October 31, 2023, but the specific timing of repayment to each rehabilitation creditor has not yet been determined.”
