On the third day of the World Test Championship final, Team India scored a total of 296 runs in the first innings, mainly due to Ajinkya Rahane (89) and Shardul Thakur (51). Rahane was at the center of this fightback from India as he showed tremendous resilience and fight. The 35-year-old batsman held one end firmly and shared a remarkable 109-run partnership with Shardul Thakur.
After being absent from the team since February last year, Rahane made a strong case for his comeback with consistent performances in domestic cricket and the 2023 Indian Premier League, where he recently won the championship with Chennai Super Kings.
Praising Rahane’s remarkable resurgence, former India captain Sourav Ganguly acknowledged the challenges of making a comeback after a long absence from the national team. Ganguly expressed his appreciation during the post-lunch show on Star Sports, saying, “It is not easy to come back as a batsman in Indian cricket and make a statement. I think it is tremendous.” Said during the post-lunch show, there have been several comebacks in the past, but not after such a long time.
Sourav Ganguly on Rahane’s performance
Ganguly said that Rahane’s performance has set a positive example for other Indian batsmen. In the first innings, the team experienced a collapse in the batting order, with none of the top four batsmen passing 20 runs. Ganguly lauded Rahane’s resilience and determination, saying, “He showed a lot to the dressing room that if you apply and if you have even a little bit of the luck that India has, you can bat on this pitch.” Will be able to, a lot of credit to Rahane, he was brilliant and Shardul Thakur too. He has batted well for India. It’s a good fight for India,” Ganguly said.
Overall, Rahane’s exceptional contribution in difficult situations not only saved India but also served as an inspiration to the rest of the batting lineup, showcasing the importance of determination and perseverance in challenging situations.
