Australia wicket-keeper batsman Alex Carey believes the decision to dismiss Shubman Gill in the final of the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) was ‘right’ and said that Cameron Green’s catch was clear from where he was standing.
On the fourth day of an entertaining match at The Oval, Gill was declared out at the stroke of tea by TV umpire Richard Kettleborough after India got off to a strong start in their run chase, needing 444 runs to win. Pacer Scott Boland found the edge of the India opener’s bat and Cameron Green dove to his left in his preferred gully position to complete the catch, but the cricketing world has been debating whether Australia The all-rounder was able to get his hands under the ball and control it.
Green immediately started celebrating the spectacular catch with his teammates. Fans and many players debated whether the batsman was out or not, and Green avoided hitting the ball on the grass when his hand came onto the ground as ‘out’ flashed on the big screen. The verdict was shown. Gill and India captain Rohit Sharma were left unimpressed with the decision as tea was taken immediately.
“I was feeling good (on the green catch), we were happy and the right decision was taken. It’s not great to see him scoring at 6 RPO (runs per over) but we back him, quick wickets help Will see more tomorrow,’ Alex Carey said at the post-match presentation.
Carey, who shared a 93-run partnership for the seventh wicket with Mitchell Starc, advised the Australian team to be patient.
“I thought Mitch (Starc) played beautifully, attacked at the right time and took the pressure off me. A tricky short period in the morning and we finished well. Class players, it’s a good partnership , we need to keep patience.” Hit the right spots and hopefully the wickets will come,” the southpaw added.
Carey believes his team got enough runs on the board against India last year WTC Finals.
“I think we have runs on the board, always looking for more wickets, but they (Rahane and Kohli) played well. We will have another chance tomorrow,” Carey said.
Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane are holding the India fort at the end of Day-4 of the ongoing World Test Championship Final 2023 between India and Australia on Saturday.
At the end of the day, India scored 164/3 in 40 overs with Ajinkya Rahane’s 20(59) and Virat Kohli’s 44(60) not out at the crease.
