Optimism’s Major Mainnet Upgrade Scheduled for June 6th at Bedrock

Layer 2 scaling solution Optimism is set to undergo its highly anticipated Bedrock upgrade on June 6th. The move is expected to significantly reduce transaction fees, provide greater network security, and better compatibility with Ethereum.

The Optimism team stated via a May 15 Twitter thread that the network would be down for 2–4 hours on June 6 as the upgrade was completed.

“On the day of the upgrade, transactions, deposits and withdrawals will be unavailable for the duration of the downtime, and the OP mainnet chain will not proceed,” reads a blog post.

Bedrock was announced in May 2022, and marks the first major network upgrade that has been voted on by the Optimism Governance Council’s token house.

Optimism is expected to benefit from lower transaction fees, which OP Labs, the network’s protocol development unit, Estimate There will be a decrease of 47%.

“Bedrock improves on its predecessor by reducing transaction fees by using optimized batch compression and Ethereum as the data availability layer; Reducing the delay in including L1 transactions in the rollup by better handling L1 reconnection,” wrote the Bedrock explainer from the Optimism community.

In addition, the network will also see shorter deposit times, with Optimism going from around 10 minutes to confirm a deposit, to just 3 minutes with Bedrock, explains the lecturer.

While node software performance “will be significantly improved by enabling the execution of multiple transactions in a single rollup ‘block’ as opposed to the previous ‘one transaction per block’ model in the previous version.”

Another important improvement concerns the network’s compatibility with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), the core piece of software that executes Ethereum smart contracts.

With Bedrock, the network will remove “many divergences” from Ethereum and EVMs that currently exist with optimism such as different codes, design patterns, and transaction-per-block models. “Bedrock also adds support for EIP-1559, on-chain re-orgs, and other Ethereum features present on L1,” reads the explainer.

ZK sync era overtaken by optimism?

Bedrock’s upcoming move comes at a time when optimistic rollup solutions such as EVM Compatible Zero-Knowledge Rollup (ZKEVM) Optimism are making headlines.

According to data from L2beat, the recently launched ZkEVM ZKSync Era by Matter Labs has left behind optimism in terms of network activity.

Over the past 30 days, ZKSync Era has seen 7.85 million transactions, compared to Optimism’s 7.66 million. While in the last 24 hours, ZKSync Era has outperformed the optimism in average transactions per second (TPS) at 6.80 TPS as compared to 2.98 TPS.
