Cyclone Biparjoy: Red alert on Gujarat coast, 30,000 houses evacuated, role of climate change; All you need to know

Tornado Alert! The coast of India is currently being attacked by Cyclone Biperjoy. It is expected to make landfall in Saurashtra and Kutch districts of Gujarat and neighboring Pakistani coastlines on June 15, 2023.

Climate change

• In more than 60 years, Cyclone Biparjoy is the third storm to strike the west coast. According to experts, the increase in both intensity and frequency is indicative of the adverse effects of climate change.
• It has been carefully established that the increase in cyclone activity in the Arabian Sea is a result of global warming, which is accompanied by higher ocean temperatures and more moisture available.
• In research on climate change assessments over the Indian region, Dr. Medha Deshpande of the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology reports that most models indicate that the Arabian Sea sees more SST warming than the Bay of Bengal.
