Nagaon (Assam): Assam police woman sub-inspector Junmoni Rabha, embroiled in several controversies, died in the early hours of Tuesday when her car collided head-on with a container truck in Nagaon district, officials said. Rabha, 30, popularly known as ‘Lady Singham’ or ‘Dabangg Cop’ after Hindi police films, was alone in his private car, not in uniform. The accident happened in Sarubhugia village under Jakhalabandha police station area of Kaliabor subdivision. CID will investigate the accident, besides a case of extortion was registered against him hours before the accident. Suspecting a conspiracy, his family demanded an impartial probe into the accident.
Jakhalabandha police station in-charge Pawan Kalita said, “After receiving information at around 2.30 am, a police patrol team reached the spot and took him to a nearby hospital. Doctors there declared him brought dead.”
The container truck bearing Uttar Pradesh registration number was seized by the police, but the driver fled from the spot after the accident, he said.
Nagaon Superintendent of Police Leena Dole reached the spot in the morning and took stock of the situation.
However, the police have no clue as to why the SI was heading towards Upper Assam alone in plain clothes without any security in her private car.
His family members also expressed ignorance about his movement. However, he suspected foul play and demanded an impartial inquiry to find out the truth behind his death.
Talking to the media here, Sumitra Rabha, the mother of the deceased, alleged that it was a case of premeditated murder by some unknown racket.
She along with Jumony’s aunt Subarna Bodo appealed to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to conduct an impartial probe into the matter and bring justice to the family by punishing the perpetrators of the “premeditated” accident.
Bodo further claimed: “On Monday night, a team of high police officers raided Jumoni’s official quarters in Nagaon and seized around Rs 1 lakh. His mother was also present during the raid.”
He claimed that the seized money belonged to Junmoni’s mother, who earned it from her small home-based poultry and pig farming business.
He appealed to the police to return the money to perform the last rites of the deceased.

Junmoni Rabha was known to be tough against criminals
Rabha, who is in-charge of Morikolong police post, is known to be tough against criminals but has been in the news for his alleged involvement in financial irregularities.
In June last year, she was arrested along with her ex-boyfriend on charges of alleged corruption and sent to judicial custody by a court in Majuli district, following which she was suspended from service. The suspension was later lifted and she rejoined the service.
She was embroiled in another controversy in January 2022, when her telephonic conversation with Amiya Kumar Bhuiyan, BJP MLA from Bihpuria constituency, was leaked.
They were engaged in a controversy after Rabha arrested some boatmen for allegedly plying country boats with illegally fitted machines and harassing the people of Bhuiyan’s constituency.
As the leaked audio tape created an uproar, then Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had said that an elected representative should be given due respect.
