Sean Williams’ brilliant 174 and Zimbabwe’s all-round dominance powered them to a convincing 304-run victory over the United States in the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2023 at the Harare Sports Club here on Monday.
Sean Williams produced a brilliant display of batting scoring 174 off 101, helping the tournament hosts post a total of over 400. Chasing a target of 409, the United States got off to a struggling start and lost their opening batsman. Second over of the game.
The United States were bowled out for 104 while chasing a mammoth total of 409 set by Zimbabwe in Harare. This was the team’s second biggest win in terms of run difference. USA collapsed in front of Zimbabwe’s huge score. Richard Nagrava gave the first blow in the third over by getting Steven Taylor (0) caught behind the wicket. He dismissed Sushant Modani (6) behind the wicket in his next over. The US were in trouble after skipper Monank Patel was dismissed by Brad Evans in the sixth over.
In the space of nine balls, Aaron Jones and Shayan Jahangir were run-out while Gajanand Singh was dismissed lbw by Raza, leaving the North American team in trouble. At 45/6, it looked as though the United States would concede defeat before even facing half of their allotted overs.

They were almost halfway through the innings thanks to some daring batting from Abhishek Paradkar (24) and JC Singh (21). This did not stop the North American team from suffering one of the biggest defeats in ODI cricket.
Earlier, Williams’ 174 took the tournament hosts’ total to 408. USA won the toss and decided to bowl first. Joylord Gumby along with his new partner gave the African team a strong start. Gumby and Innocent Kaia together added 56 runs for the first wicket. Kaia was eventually beaten by JC Singh while attempting to loft to the midwicket zone. However, this brought Sean Williams to the crease, where he put in a commendable performance against USA. He hit 6,4,4 runs off Nisarg Patel in the 15th over.
In his stand with Gumby, the southpaw took the lead and brought up his half-century in just 33 balls. In reaching this point, he hit seven fours and two sixes.
Williams batted aggressively throughout the innings, scoring 74 runs in overs 26–35. He completed his century in just 65 balls. It was the second fastest ODI century for Zimbabwe.
Despite losing to Gumby, Zimbabwe’s aggression kept them ahead in the game. Zimbabwe’s impressive performance in the qualifiers endeared Sikandar Raza. They shared a fifty-run partnership in only 27 balls.
By the time Raza was dismissed for 48, the tournament hosts had crossed 300 in the 43rd over. After this, Ryan Burl increased Zimbabwe’s lead by playing a quick inning of 47 runs in 16 balls. Williams was dismissed for 174 in the 49th over.
Brief scores: Zimbabwe 408/6 (Sean Williams 174, Ryan Burl 47; Abhishek Paradkar 3-78) v USA 104 (Abhishek Paradkar 24, Jasdeep Singh 21; Sikandar Raza 2-15).
