The United States Secret Service has finally shed more light on its bizarre non-fungible token (NFT) collection sitting on OpenSea.

The NFT collection was first revealed on May 16 during a Reddit AMA, where agents answered questions from members of the r/cryptocurrency subreddit about their involvement in crypto and blockchain technology. Until this time, not much explanation had been given about the NFT collection or why it exists.

Speaking to Cointelegraph, agents from the Secret Service’s San-Francisco field office, known as the “Digital Asset Technology Alliance” (DATA) squad, said they wanted to better understand how NFTs work. Are.

It also serves as a forward-looking example of the agency’s interest in the wider crypto ecosystem, said forensic financial analyst Andrew Frey, the agent who led the Reddit AMA.

The Data Squad is a sub-unit of the Secret Service San Francisco Field Office that deals exclusively with crypto-related crimes.

Special Agent Alfonso Speed ​​stated that each person on the DATA squad had their own unique NFT, each one personalized specifically for each field agent.

“Everybody who has an NFT had the opportunity to represent where they wanted to be represented in Northern California, specifically the San Francisco Bay Area.”

When Special Agent in Charge Sean Bradstreet pointed out that Speed ​​was shown standing on top of the infamous prison Alcatraz, the team laughed.

“You really see the personalities of the people or the things they enjoy doing,” Speed ​​said.

While some NFTs have received multiple offers ranging from 0.0028 ETH ($5) to around 0.02 ETH ($37), none have been accepted.

The agents said the NFTs were never created to be offered for sale. Overall, agents of the Data Taskforce take a positive approach to crypto, with many of them owning crypto and NFTs in a personal capacity.

Frey shared that while NFT collecting was a fun and creative outlet for the team, it is also a serious symbol of their involvement and dedication to the broader crypto landscape.

“Pretty much, it’s not a ‘wrong’ notion that law enforcement doesn’t know what they’re doing in the crypto sphere,” Frey said. “I think our NFT is a good way to show that we have a seat at the table and that we are really invested in investigating crypto and digital assets.”

Frey reiterated that the NFT collection was also created to highlight the agency’s reach and make them more accessible by the public and crypto enthusiasts in particular.

“The spirit behind them is public education,” said Supervisory Special Agent Ryan Cole.

Being able to interact directly with members of the crypto community through social media platforms like Reddit has proven essential in the past to solving crimes and returning funds to victims, Frey said.

“Through those conversations we learned that this whole community was concerned and alarmed about all these different types of scams,” Frey said. “The cases we deal with are typically victim-based crimes and one of the main goals of our investigative work is to make these victims rehabilitated.”

The Secret Service is given two main mandates: to protect key political leaders and to protect America’s financial and critical infrastructure.
