NHS England has advertised a procurement contract worth up to £35 million to build a new NHS privacy enhancing technology (NHS-PET) as part of its planned Federated Data Platform (FDP) programme.
The announcement states that the NHS-PET will be designed to “provide robust security and a standardized approach to support secure data use, including ensuring data privacy treatment and appropriate data access”.
NHSE was unable to immediately comment on the announcement.
Although the proposed new system will initially be deployed to FDPs, the announcement states that it will be a standalone service that potentially includes cloud-based software as a service (SSA) to provide data privacy and security to FDPs and the wider NHS. SaaS) solutions. ,
NHS-PET will be used across the NHSE in combination with various data platforms. The announcement said: “Connectivity between NHS enterprise data platforms is vitally important as it will enable the rapid scaling and sharing of locally developed tools and applications in a secure way, allowing for leveling and variation across England would help reduce it.”
Bidders for the contract must ensure that their solution is designed according to open standards to support integration and scaling requirements.
NHS-PET will be a niche service that is an essential part of the overall NHS data protection ecosystem and FDP capability to securely share data.
The initial NHS-PET contract will be for three years, with the winning operator having an additional option to extend it for a further four years with a total estimated value of up to £35 million over the contract period. The tender announcement states that the actual contract price will depend on the extent of service usage. The last date for bidding is July 26.
Earlier this month, the NHSE awarded a £25 million, 12-month contract to US data analytics giant Palantir to “transition” its existing projects with the health service into FDPs. Palantir is widely seen as the leading bid to run the FDP, which is expected to be awarded a £480 million contract in the coming months.
