The dramatic final day of the second Test of the 2023 Ashes series between England and Australia caught the attention of cricket fans across the globe. Among the various incidents that unfolded, the controversial run-out of Jonny Bairstow by Australia wicket-keeper Alex Carey took center stage. Opinion has been highly divisive on whether this action is in line with the ‘spirit of cricket’. However, England head coach Brendon McCullum did not hold back in reacting to Australia’s move.

During the post-match press conference, McCullum expressed his reluctance to share a beer with any member of the Australian team after his controversial run-out. He stressed the importance of maintaining the spirit of cricket and said, “I can’t imagine we’ll be having a beer with them anytime soon. We’ve got three Tests to try and win the Ashes. is where our focus lies. In the end, you have to live with the decisions you make, and that’s life. But I think from our perspective, if we were in the same situation, we might have made a different decision Would have taken it,” he said in an interview with the BBC.
Ironically, McCullum himself had a similar run-out during his playing days, as did Alex Carey in the second Ashes Test. In a Test match between New Zealand and Sri Lanka in Christchurch in 2006, Kumar Sangakkara scored a century and ran to celebrate. Muttiah Muralitharan, who was at the other end, ran towards the middle of the pitch to congratulate the wicketkeeper-batsman. Taking advantage of the opportunity, McCullum, stationed behind the stumps, ran out the great off-spinner.
In the specific instance involving Jonny Bairstow, when he was on 10, he survived a Cameron Green bouncer that went straight into the gloves of Alex Carey. In reply, the leading English batsman headed towards the center of the pitch to have a discussion with captain Ben Stokes. Noticing this, Carey swiftly threw the ball towards the stumps, thus appealing for a run-out. Third umpire Marais Erasmus immediately declared Bairstow out.
