How often do you find it difficult to leave your well-paying job and embark on a path that is not comfortable and full of challenges? Robert Frost once wrote, ‘I took that which took the least travelled, and that made all the difference.’ The story of Dr. Bhairavi Joshi is also similar to this line. He is a dentist by profession but has made a name for himself in the field of cycling, literature and TED Talks.
Who is Bhairavi Joshi?
Bhairavi Joshi was born in Vadodara. His father Arunbhai Nayak, a mechanical engineer, and Ushaben, a general practitioner, were his first inspirations. He was born in Vadodara, later his family moved to Valsad where his new home became the center of his dreams. He studied at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and later obtained his BDS degree from a dental college in Jamnagar. A special achievement in his academic achievement was securing the highest marks in Pediatric Dentistry in the whole of India.
Early life and career
In 1998, she got married to Dr. Kalpesh Joshi. He started his career as a dentist in Kasturba Hospital. But by 2004, he opened Dhruvi Dental Clinic, which is still operational today. However, the birth of their daughter Vaishvi in 2010 proved to be a turning point in their lives. With her gaining weight, she turned to physical activity to regain her health. During this time he discovered a new passion – cycling. Although it started as a mere physical activity, his hobby gradually turned into almost a profession. She participated in the 50 km cyclothon in Ahmedabad in 2015 and finished fifth despite her lack of formal training. His potential didn’t stop shining there; Within a year, he completed a grueling 200 km night cycling event, which only strengthened his love for cycling.
In 2019, she was appointed the BYCS Global Foundation’s Cycle Mayor for Valsad district and with this, she became the fourth person in the country to hold the post. Their growing influence led to the birth of the BYCS India Foundation, which acknowledged the vast differences between the culture, climate and traffic of the Netherlands and India. In 2021, her role grew further when she became a member of the ‘Cycle for Health’ committee of the Ministry of Health, Government of India.
Dr.Bhairavi Joshi and Literature
When his elder daughter wrote a book on her father, Dr. Joshi came up with the idea of Rising Writer’s Club, a platform to encourage young writers. State level story writing competitions were held in this venture and many publications participated in it. In 2016, the club received national recognition when Bollywood actor Boman Irani inaugurated 34 books written by the children of the club. A dentist, cycling enthusiast, mayor of a Netherlands-based foundation and literary patron, Dr. Joshi’s story is one of those lesser-known stories that serve as an inspiration to women in India.
