India’s Jyoti Yaraji made India’s gold medal debut at the Asian Athletics Championships by winning the women’s 100m hurdles in Bangkok here on Thursday.
Yaraji clocked 13.09s in the final race to finish ahead of two Japanese runners Terada Asuka (13.13s) and Aoki Masumi (13.26s) at the Supachalasai Stadium. In the men’s 1500m final, another surprise gold medal lay in wait. With a time of 3:41.51, Ajay Kumar Saroj won the gold medal ahead of more famous runners from Qatar, China, Japan and even India’s Jinson Johnson. In the men’s triple jump, with a jump of 16.92m, Abdullah Abubakar won India’s third gold medal of the day. Abubakar jumped 16.92 metres.

Meanwhile, Aishwarya Mishra won the bronze medal in the women’s 400m race by clocking 53.07 seconds. The Asian Athletics Championships 2023 is underway at the Suphachalsai National Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand. The five-day event began on July 12 and will end on July 16.
Tejaswin Shankar won bronze medal in decathlon. He also won a bronze medal in long jump in Commonwealth Games 2022. Since then, Shankar has competed in the decathlon, perhaps the toughest of all track and field sports. The decathlon is a combined event in athletics consisting of ten track and field events. A decathlon competition lasts for two days as it consists of a number of sports. The events are 100 m, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400 m, 110 m hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw, 1500 m. Shankar was making his debut in the sport and won the bronze medal. By the end of the second day, India has won 6 medals including 3 gold.
