Ugreen PowerROM 1200 with included accessories Adrian Kingsley-Hughes/ZDNET
Power stations have revolutionized the way of charging and powering equipment. Instead of relying on 12V inverters or gasoline generators, I can essentially take a giant power bank with me outdoors, and charge everything with it. And when that runs out, I can charge the power station with AC power, the vehicle’s 12V outlet, or solar power.

That way, the outdoor fun will never end.
And since I’ve been using them, power station technology has improved dramatically. The units themselves have become more compact and robust, and battery technology has advanced as well.
One of the biggest changes is the shift from lithium-ion battery technology to LiFePO4 batteries. These are not as power-intensive as their lithium counterparts, but they are safer (i.e., less likely to catch fire) and have a much longer lifespan. How long? Lasts up to six times longer.
In reality, while lithium-ion batteries are good for 500 to 2,000 recharge cycles, LiFePO4 batteries can handle up to 3,000 recharge cycles, making them ideal for long-term use.

For the past few weeks, I’ve been testing a new power station from Ugreen – the powerrom 1200, I own a lot of Ugreen gear – from chargers and cables to power banks – and it’s a brand I’ve grown to trust. This is the first power station of the company.

Note that the model I’m testing is for the UK market, and thus the AC outlets are different from the US model. Other than that, the units are functionally identical.

There are a few things I look for when testing a power station.
The PowerROM 1200 has very stylish, easy-to-use controls. Adrian Kingsley-Hughes/ZDNET
Firstly, does the rated battery capacity match the information on the spec sheet? With PowerROM 1200, each and every specification is exactly as mentioned by the seller. I’m particularly impressed with the fast charge feature, which can charge the unit from zero to 80 percent in 50 minutes, and fully charge in 90 minutes on AC power.

Another thing I look at is the build quality. After all, this is a device that will be carried around, taken on camping trips and other outdoor adventures, and generally vandalized.
I really like the subtle buttons on this unit. Adrian Kingsley-Hughes/ZDNET
No problem here. The PowerROM 1200 is highly robust, enduring bumps and impacts. The top handle is sturdy and the unit is well balanced, which makes its 11.5 kg/25.4 lb weight more pleasant to carry.
My second priority is usability, and here, again, Ugreen is the winner. The display is nice and clear, the controls are simple, and you won’t be left scratching your head over how to turn on the AC or how much power is left.

The buttons are small and discreet, difficult to accidentally trigger, and have very subtle illumination that makes them visible without glare even in low light conditions. This makes me very happy because I do a lot of photography at night and I don’t like having my night vision destroyed by laser-like LEDs.
The PowerROM 1200 is such an easy-to-use and mature unit, it’s hard to believe this is Ugreen’s first foray into power stations.
The PowerROM 1200’s display shows you everything you need to know (but no more) – which keeps it tidy and easy to read at a glance. Adrian Kingsley-Hughes/ZDNET
I am very impressed.
Lastly, there is security. In particular, I like to test what happens when the unit is overloaded. In this case, nothing dramatic happens. The PowerROM 1200 simply cuts off the power and waits for the AC to reset when the pressure drops. And for such a small unit, it’s capable of supporting devices with power ratings of up to 2500W thanks to its built-in U-Turbo mode.
As far as longevity is concerned, this is one power station that has stood the test of time. For the past few months, I’ve been using the PowerROM 1200 to run power tools when I’m away from the main outlet. This means that it is thrown into the back of a truck and hauled to some inhospitable location full of mud, dirt and moisture, subjected to high loads, then put back on charge waiting for its next job. Has been given. This type of use far exceeds the power station’s design, and yet the PowerROM 1200 is still going strong.
This unit is as tough as they get!
