At a press conference announcing the strike on Friday, SAG-AFTRA chief negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland revealed a proposal from AMPTP, in which background artists would be scanned by AI, receive a day’s pay, and their image and likenesses will be owned and used by his company. in perpetuity.
“He proposed that our background artists should be able to get scanned, they should get a day’s pay, and their companies should have that scan, their image, their likeness, and people in any project for eternity should be allowed to use it however they want without consent and without compensation,” Crabtree-Ireland said.
The alleged proposal has major ethical implications as workers would potentially lose pay for their work, and also raises questions about the future and authenticity of acting.
In a statement to ZDNET, AMPTP denied the claims, stating that the organization would pay actors to use their digital likeness and sought actors’ consent.

“The claim made by SAG-AFTRA leadership that digital replicas of background actors can be used in perpetuity without consent or compensation is false. In fact, the current AMPTP proposal only allows a company to use a digital replica of a background actor. motion picture for which the background actor is employed. Any other use requires the background actor’s consent and bargaining for use, subject to a minimum payment,” an AMPTP spokesperson told ZDNET told.
While conflicting statements leave the true nature of the proposal unclear, it cannot be denied that generic AI will pervade the ways in which our favorite arts are produced.
