‘Crorepati Tomatowala’: Pune farmer earns Rs 2.8 cr in a month by selling tomatoes

Pune: Amidst the skyrocketing prices of tomatoes across the country, a farmer from Maharashtra’s Pune district has claimed to have earned more than Rs 2.8 crore by selling tomatoes. Ishwar Gaikar (36) and his wife, residents of Pune’s Junnar taluka, have no intention of stopping here. The farmer couple aims to earn Rs 3.5 crore from the stock of around 4000 crates of tomatoes available with them. Talking about his years of hard work, Ishwar Gaikar said, “This is not something that I have earned in a day. I have been cultivating tomatoes in my 12-acre farm for the last six-seven years. I am also at a loss.” Many times but I never gave up my hopes. I suffered a loss of Rs 18-20 lakh in 2021 but I didn’t stop.”

Talking about his profits this year, Gaikar said, “This year, I have cultivated tomatoes in 12 acres and till date, I have sold around 17000 crates, which cost Rs 770 to Rs 2311 per crate. So in total, I have earned Rs. 2.8 crore till date.”

He further added, “I still have around 3000 to 4000 crates of tomato stock in my farm. So if you calculate, my total earning this year will be around Rs 3.5 crore.” Gaiker said that his family is happy with his success. Thanking his wife who worked with him in the farm and the blessings of his parents and grandparents, he said, “I think I got this success because of the blessings of my parents, grandparents and the hard work of my wife.” Found because of what works together.” I am in the field Everyone in my family is happy with the price we got for our tomatoes.”

Gaikar said that he thought he would get around Rs 30 per kg by selling tomatoes, but his luck changed this season. He said, “Before this season, I had a feeling that I would get around Rs 30 per kg for tomatoes, but this time it turned out to be a bumper lottery for me.” Gaykar is doing farming since 2005. He took over the responsibility of farming from his father and now works on his farm with his wife. Earlier he used to cultivate tomato on only 1 acre of land. With the availability of labor from later 2017, he is cultivating tomatoes on 12 acres. Apart from tomatoes, Gaikar also cultivates onions and flowers in the respective seasons.

Earlier, in a relief to consumers, who were forced to give up tomatoes after their prices skyrocketed across the country, the Center on Sunday reduced the wholesale price of tomatoes from Rs 90 to Rs 80 per kg. According to an official release, after re-assessing the prevailing market situation, the Center has decided to revise the price of tomato. The change in prices will be implemented from Sunday, July 16, in Delhi, Noida, Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi, Patna, Muzaffarpur and Arrah through National Agriculture Cooperation Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) and National Consumer Cooperation Federation (NCCF). ,

It will be expanded to more cities based on the prevailing market rates at the current locations. Tomato rates were earlier revised to Rs 90 per kg on July 14.
