Reddit on Friday added more space to the r/Places collaborative canvas, giving users additional space to collaboratively create pixelated art. Almost immediately after the location was added, users began writing in their protest against the site and CEO Steve Huffman.
The stretched canvas now extends further to the right. As I’m writing this, large-scale land grabs are taking place, including a space already memorializing YouTuber Technoblade, a continuation of the German flag at the top of the canvas, a vertical French flag on the right, and several repetitions of the phrase “Fuck Spaz,” a reference to Huffman’s username.
You can see the 2023 canvas in progress in the gallery below, which we’ll be updating as r/place goes live.
R/Place works by letting users drop one of eight color pixels wherever they want on the canvas, but they have to wait a few minutes before being able to drop the other. Communities work together to collectively create art or write messages, whether for fun in their own subreddits or in more protest-oriented community, Reddit added to canvas twice in the meantime 2022 iteration of r/placeSo it’s no huge surprise that this year he did it again.
Currently, the imagery and language of the protest has generally become harder to identify as more art fills the canvas. But users have placed things like the phrase “u/spez ist ein hurensohn” on the German flag, which Google Translate says translates to “u/spez is a son of a bitch” and is a propaganda sign. Save3rdPartyApps Community In which it is written, “Never forget what was stolen from you!” According to r/place’s canvas rules“Targeted hate or harassment of private individuals” will be removed, as well as “posts, comments and images that are hateful, graphic, sexually-explicit and/or offensive are in violation of our policy.”
