Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) under the mentorship of Gautam Gambhir secured their place in the playoffs of the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) with a narrow one-run win over Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). The victory came as they defended a target of 177 in the away game, which secured them the coveted playoff spot. However, the match was not without its share of drama. From 1 May onwards, fans were booing Gambhir and Naveen-ul-Haq, and the trend continued at the Eden Gardens, where chants of ‘Kohli Kohli’ erupted when Ul-Haq came to the bowling crease.

While returning to the pavilion after the game, the fans taunted Gambhir, chanting Kohli’s name. These unexpected jibes from Gambhir, who led KKR to two IPL titles during his tenure, came as a surprise as Eden Gardens was like a second home ground for him. Gambhir had joined KKR during the 2011 IPL mega-auction and captained the team for seven successful years. Under his leadership, KKR became a formidable force, winning IPL titles in 2012 and 2014. However, Gambhir was released ahead of the IPL 2018 mega-auction, ending his association with the team.
Having secured a place in the playoffs, LSG will now travel to Chennai for the crucial eliminator match on 24th May. The winner of the Eliminator will play the loser of the first qualifier on 26 May, while the loser will be eliminated from the tournament. , As it stands, Gujarat Titans have booked their place in the first qualifier, while LSG will have to compete in the eliminator. Chennai Super Kings are currently on the second spot, but their position is not yet confirmed. Royal Challengers Bangalore, Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals are the three teams that are still fighting for a place in the playoffs. The exciting season of cricket has come to an end with the final of IPL 2023 all set to take place on 28th May.
