Carlos Alcaraz on Monday replaced Novak Djokovic at No. 1 in the ATP rankings, becoming the top seed at the French Open 2023, and Daniil Medvedev’s Italian Open title lifted him to No. 2 ahead of the second Grand Slam tournament of the year.
Djokovic’s loss in the fourth round in Rome as the defending champion dropped him to No. 3. That means he and Alcaraz could end up in the same half of the Roland Garros bracket and be set for a possible semifinal showdown, depending on what happens. In Thursday’s draw in Paris.
The French Open, which starts on Sunday, will be the first time for the Spaniard, Alcaraz, who turns 20 this month, to be seeded No. 1 in a major tournament. He is 30-3 in 2023 with four titles.
Alcaraz reached the top ATP spot for the first time by winning the US Open 2022 in September last year and at the age of 19 became the youngest man to complete a year there. But a foot injury kept him out of the Australian Open in January, when Djokovic won his 22nd title at the Slam event, tying Rafael Nadal for the men’s record.
Djokovic has spent more weeks at No. 1 than anyone – man or woman – in the history of the sport’s computerized rankings. In Paris, defending champion Inga Swiatek remains No. 1 in the WTA rankings, which she has led for more than a year, followed by Australian Open champion No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka.

Swiatek stopped playing in the third set of her quarterfinal in Rome against Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina due to a right thigh injury. Swiatek later said that the problem “shouldn’t be anything serious.”
Rybakina’s trophy at the Italian Open allowed her to jump two places to a career-best No. 4 on Monday. That’s no more because her title at the All England Club didn’t come with the benefit of any ranking boost after both the WTA and ATP all earned it last year for protesting a ban on Russian and Belarusian players.
