If the Greenidge is any indication, we’ll see real conversations around bitcoin mining and class increasingly consumed by another conflict: the culture war. I’ve said for a while, perhaps being too reductive, that bitcoin is going to be a red-blue issue in America, with Republicans increasingly supporting it and Democrats rejecting it. Although the network will always be “reliably neutral,” the way we think about, and politicize, it will fall along predictable lines. Many subjects have traveled this way. Before climate change became a significant issue in American politics, for example, it was a relatively nonpartisan issue that many politicians agreed needed to do something about.
