Lucknow Super Giants’ journey in IPL 2023 came to an end on Wednesday (May 24) as they suffered a crushing 81-run defeat against Mumbai Indians in the Eliminator match. Led by Krunal Pandya, the team, mentored by former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir, could manage only 101 runs in reply to a target of 183. Unfortunately, this marked the second year in a row that LSG bowed out of Eliminator contention.
The LSG batsmen struggled to keep up, and uncapped Mumbai Indians pacer Akash Madhwal wreaked havoc, taking five wickets for just five runs in 3.3 overs. This outstanding performance achieved the best bowling figures by an uncapped bowler in the history of the IPL. The total of 101 was LSG’s lowest total in the tournament this year. After the team’s humiliating defeat at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, fans present at the iconic stadium in the Tamil Nadu capital loudly chanted Virat Kohli’s name to mock Gautam Gambhir.
A video captured of fans chanting Kohli’s name while Gambhir was close to Gambhir has now gone viral on the internet. The footage is of a post-match conversation between players and members of the support staff of both the teams. During the conversation between Gambhir and Sachin Tendulkar, fans started teasing Gambhir by taking Kohli’s name. However, the former Kolkata Knight Riders skipper remained unfazed and did not accept the chants.

This incident was not an isolated incident during IPL 2023. Similar chants of Kohli’s name to provoke Gambhir were seen during LSG’s matches against Chennai Super Kings in Lucknow and Kolkata Knight Riders in Kolkata.

Gambhir and Kohli, who shared the Indian team dressing room for several years, had an altercation during the LSG-RCB match on 1 May, which attracted significant attention when videos of their heated exchange surfaced online.
Despite LSG’s disappointing exit from the tournament, the fans’ taunting chants were a reminder of the spirited nature of IPL fans and the rivalry that can arise between players.
