England batting wicket-keeper Jonny Bairstow showed sympathy for Ben Foakes after he had to make way for Bairstow, who is returning to the team after suffering a broken leg and broken ankle in a golf accident last winter.
In Bairstow’s absence, Fox has impressed with the bat as well as behind the stumps for the Three Lions in the Test format against Pakistan and New Zealand. But now he finds himself out of the team as the Ashes and the only Test match against Ireland draws closer. “Absolutely, and that’s the nature of the game. He’s been an integral part of the last 12 months and how he’s gone about it,” Bairstow told Sky Sports News.
“It’s something that’s never easy and I’ve been on the receiving end of it, so I’ve got some sympathy for Ben. I have no doubt he’ll be back at some point soon.”
“I have always said that as long as I am in the frame to be in the team, I want to represent my country out there… whether it is batting or wicket-keeping.” The decision has been made and I will do my best out there,” Bairstow said.
The 33-year-old is trying to get himself back into both his Second XI with Yorkshire and the County Championship. He is now looking forward to a summer in which England will aim to wrest Ashes glory from old rivals Australia.
“It’s been great to be back with Yorkshire and have a match at Champo under my belt. Especially after a harsh winter, it’s great to be back and I’m really enjoying my cricket.”
Bairstow also reflected on his time during the injury as he watched his national team perform against the best of cricketing nations.
“You’re sitting on your sofa with your foot in a cast and some swelling, so it’s never easy,” said Bairstow, reflecting on his cold at home.
“But to see the boys win the T20 World Cup in Australia and see the Test team be so successful in Pakistan and New Zealand was fantastic – and a pleasure to watch,” Bairstow said.
