Encrypted email service Skiff is now one of the default email options on all iOS devices.
Although this does not mean that it will completely replace Apple Mail. Still, it represents an important step forward for secure email services that are trying to persuade more people to switch from Big Tech apps.
While the adoption of security software such as encrypted messaging apps and VPN services has become standard protection, ditching your Gmail or Outlook account seems too much of a burden, too often. Even better, now that Apple has made swapping a little easier.
Skiff, privacy as default
“Sciff is built on the idea that privacy should be the default. Protecting your privacy online should be easy to choose—not a privilege reserved for those who have the time to jump through hoops or get a cryptography degree. CEO of Skiff “Becoming the default iOS Mail app was critical to our mission,” Andrew Milich told TechRadar.
Milich, along with its CTO Jason Ginsberg, founded the encrypted collaboration platform in 2020 to give users more control over the information they share online. Its first product, Pages, was launched in 2021. Both Skiff Mail and Drive were publicly released in 2022.
Skiff operates under a zero-trust privacy approach, meaning it does not store or collect sensitive user information such as location. Everything is end-to-end encrypted and also open source.
Now, after nearly two years in operation, Apple has officially recognized Skiff as a valuable alternative to the big names out there and ushered in its own elite group of default Mail apps.
Milich explained that the selection was the result of more than a year of product improvement. These include better offline support, more secure sign-in options, and ensuring Skiff’s seamless compatibility with all email links on iOS.

While less popular email services like Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook, and even Spark were already included among the default options, the privilege hasn’t extended to all of the best-encrypted email apps.
At the time of writing, the service developed by anonymous virtual private network provider ProtonMail is the default option, but there are several other options such as Tutanota, SecureMyMail, and PrivateMail—As yet,
Milich said, “We are thrilled that Apple has also made privacy an important priority, and has worked with us to ensure that end-to-end encrypted email is now seamlessly integrated with iOS. “
To set Skiff Mail as your default mail choice, first visit the Apple Store and download the app to your device. After that, click on Adjustment , skiff mail and set the app as your default,
