New Delhi: Defense Ministry officials have said that the Indian Army, Air Force and Navy have a shortfall of over 11,000 officers, more than half of whom are in the army. According to the Defense Ministry, there is a shortage of Major and Captain rank officers. At the same time, the Indian Air Force is short of important officers like Squadron Leader and Flight Lieutenant. Similarly, there is a shortage of officers in the Indian Navy, including officers of the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
Regarding these vacant posts, the Ministry of Defense says that there was less recruitment of officers during the Kovid-19 epidemic. According to the Defense Ministry, due to less recruitment of officers in the Kovid-19 period, there has been a shortage of 11,266 officers of Major and Captain and equivalent rank and other ranks in the Indian Air Force and Navy.
The Ministry of Defense told the Parliament in writing that the posts of more than 6,800 officers are vacant in the Indian Army. The Army has a shortage of 2,094 Major-level officers and 4,734 Captain-level officers. On the other hand, the Indian Air Force is short of 881 Squadron Leaders and 940 Flight Lieutenants.

The Navy has a shortfall of 2,617 officers of the rank of lieutenant commander and below. According to Minister of State for Defense Ajay Bhatt, the appointment of officers in the Air Force, Navy and Army has been affected during the pandemic. Apart from this, the Ministry of Defense says that less recruitment in auxiliary cadre like ‘Short Service Commission’ (SSC) is also responsible for this shortage of officers. Significantly, the recruitment of officers in the defense forces is done through many mediums. One of them is through SSC, where cadets pass out after 11 months of training to become officers and serve in the defense forces for a fixed period of 10 to 14 years.
The Defense Ministry says it is not looking at alternative strategies such as redeployment of officers to these posts to meet the shortfall, but to make ‘short service’ entry in the Army more attractive. However, one positive thing among defense forces vacancies is that the Ministry of Defense has started recruiting women candidates in National Defense Academy (NDA) from the year 2022. From the year 2022 till now, 57 women cadets have been recruited through NDA.
Haryana leads in the number of NDA women cadets. According to the Defense Ministry, all 57 vacancies of women cadets in the NDA have been filled. Of these, maximum 19 women cadets are from Haryana followed by Uttar Pradesh (12). According to the Defense Ministry, three women cadets each have been recruited from Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab and two each from Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. A total of four women cadets from Kerala were recruited in the army through NDA, out of which one has resigned.
