Australia and England are reshaping their bowling attacks for the third Ashes Test starting at Headingley on Thursday. Jonny Bairstow’s dismissal at Lord’s on Sunday added to the tension in an already exciting series. Even though both sides have said they are moving on from the incident, they are on what is considered the most hostile ground in England. Bairstow, whose home ground is Headingley, strayed from his crease after the last ball of Cameron Green’s over and was stumped. England agrees that the decision was correct but does not think it was game on. Australia said it is fair. Both the prime ministers supported their respective sides in the debate.
After the uproar and 43-run defeat at the normally calm Lord’s, England are a more desperate team after going 2-0 down. Australia can win the series and retain the urn at Headingley. England first called back fast bowlers Mark Wood and Chris Woakes and spinner Moeen Ali on Wednesday. James Anderson and Josh Tongue lead the way.
They decided not to add backup batsman Dan Lawrence to the injured Ollie Pope, who was ruled out of the series with a dislocated shoulder. Instead, Harry Brook would be promoted from No. 5 to 3 in the lineup. This showed that England were preparing for a more batsman-friendly strip with a deeper lineup, and were boosting their chances of getting Australia out twice.

Australia have lost off-spinner Nathan Lyon for the series with a torn calf and have been replaced by Todd Murphy, who will be playing his fifth Test and first in the Ashes. Captain Pat Cummins did not announce his squad on Wednesday but had earlier suggested that Scott Boland could replace him to manage Josh Hazlewood’s load.
Boland starred in the World Test Championship final victory against India at The Oval, but was targeted in the opening match of the Ashes at Edgbaston, conceding 5 runs per over. He made way for Mitchell Starc, who was less expensive with a six-wicket haul at Lord’s. Hazlewood has bowled well in the two Ashes Tests after suffering a side strain and Achilles problems but could be rested due to his injury history. This occasion will be Steve Smith’s 100th Test.
