A controversial run-out incident involving Jonny Bairstow in the much-anticipated second Test of the Ashes 2023 at Lord’s has once again sparked the spirit of cricket debate in the cricketing world. The incident occurred when Bairstow was run out by Australian wicket-keeper Alex Carey in a swift run, leading many to question the ethics of the move.
Ravichandran Ashwin, a name often associated with Spirit of Cricket controversies, especially for the mankading of Jos Buttler in IPL 2019, has finally reacted to this latest incident. In a tweet, Ashwin backed Alex Carey’s smart decision, suggesting that the wicketkeeper must have noticed Bairstow’s pattern of leaving the crease frequently.
One fact we must understand loud and clear
“The keeper will never dip the stumps from that far away in a Test match unless he or his team has noticed the pattern of the batsman leaving the crease after releasing the ball like Bairstow did.”
We should appreciate sporting talents…

@ashwinravi99 According to the book, this incident is comparable to your Mankad episode in 2012 – certainly approved by the rules but questionable on other accounts. A simple question – why is it that you and Team India are accused of “sportsmanship”…

England won the toss and chose bowling in the match. The Australian batsmen dominated the English bowlers in the first innings to post a strong score of 416 runs. Steve Smith scored 110 runs while scoring a brilliant century. Despite a valiant 98 from Ben Duckett, England could only manage 325 in their first innings and lost their last six wickets for just 47 runs. Stuart Broad and the English bowlers struggled in the third innings to restrict Australia to 279 runs.
Chasing a target of 371 runs, England got into trouble after losing five wickets for 177 runs. That’s when captain Ben Stokes came forward and displayed his exceptional batting skills, scoring a daring 155 off 214 balls. However, his efforts failed as England eventually lost the match by 43 runs, giving Australia a vital series victory.

The run-out incident involving Bairstow and Carey became a significant talking point during the game, reigniting the ongoing debate about the spirit of cricket. While some called Carey’s move against the spirit of fair play, Ashwin’s support for the wicketkeeper added another layer of controversy to the discussion.
The spirit of cricket has always been a point of contention in the sport with varying viewpoints and interpretations. While some argue for strict adherence to rules, others advocate greater leniency and situational awareness. Ultimately, it is up to the players, officials and cricket authorities to strike a balance and ensure that the integrity and spirit of the game is maintained.
