Afghanistan will be eyeing their maiden ODI series win in Bangladesh as they take on their Asian rivals in the opening encounter today. In their last two ODI series on Bangladesh soil, Afghanistan had to face 2-1 defeats both times. The first ODI match between Bangladesh and Afghanistan is to be played at the Zahoor Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram. Bangladesh will be led in the ODI series by Tamim Iqbal, who did not feature in his team’s spectacular Test win against Afghanistan in June this year. Tamim could not play in that match due to back injury. Afghanistan have brought back their star performer Rashid Khan in the squad for the ODIs. Rashid did not play in the Test against Bangladesh last month.
Bangladesh and Afghanistan last met in ODIs in February 2022 and Afghanistan won that encounter by seven wickets. Overall, Afghanistan have managed to win only on one occasion in their last five ODIs. It is expected that the upcoming ODI series will help both the sides prepare for the ODI World Cup, which will be played in India. Afghanistan and Bangladesh will begin their World Cup campaign with a match against each other on October 7 in Dharamsala.
