Chennai Super Kings (CSK) players like Shivam Dubey and Tushar Deshpande have become Indian Premier League (IPL) champions for the first time in their careers. But more than that the Mumbai duo have grown as cricketers under MS Dhoni.
Dube ended the IPL 2023 season with the second-highest number of sixes behind South African skipper Faf du Plessis with 35 sixes, while Deshpande finished as the sixth-highest wicket-taker with 21 wickets in 16 matches. .
The duo revealed MS Dhoni’s inspirational dressing room speech when CSK won a record-equalling fifth IPL title. “He told everyone that hard work pays off, but remember what we did right this year and where we went wrong. ‘Yeh season tumko kya sikhya ke gaya hai, aur aage kya karna’,” Mahi Bhai said. Hai, ye zaroor sochna’, Deshpande was quoted as saying by the Indian Express newspaper.
Mumbai all-rounder Dube finished as CSK’s third-highest run-scorer after Devon Conway and Ruturaj Gaikwad, with 418 runs from 16 matches with 3 fifties and a strike-rate of 158.33. “Mahi bhai gave me clarity of thought. He told me what my role was. It was easy, you have to go and increase the run rate of the team. (You have to increase the run rate). Even if I get out early then there is no problem but try to complete the given task. The brief was clear,” Dubey told the Indian Express newspaper.
Although Deshpande was expensive while bowling, he finished as the leading wicket-taker for CSK. “Once I didn’t bowl well, he told not to worry. Don’t be in a rush and just follow the process. Once during a presentation he said the new impact rule, 200 plus scores are the new normal. His mind is clear when he speaks. He has given the bail that (young) players want.”

Both Dube and Deshpande will be hoping that Dhoni will return to guide them in 2024 but the CSK captain will probably need to undergo surgery after playing through the IPL 2023 season with an injured knee. “Yes, it is true that Dhoni will take medical advice for his left knee injury and take a decision accordingly. If surgery is advised, it can be ascertained only after the reports come, it will be entirely his decision.
