Early Guidance: Jaiveer Singh, Foundations of a Champion
Early in his athletic journey, Neeraj Chopra found himself under the tutelage of his childhood coach, Jaiveer Singh. It was under Singh’s tutelage that the young talent, hailing from Khandra village in Haryana’s Panipat district, was first introduced to the art of javelin throwing. Singh’s invaluable coaching laid the foundation for Chopra’s future success.
The Pivotal Phase: The Formative Influence of Naseem Ahmed
In 2011, Neeraj Chopra arrived at the Tau Devi Lal Sports Complex in Panchkula, Haryana, where he encountered coach Naseem Ahmed. Under Ahmed’s guidance, Chopra observed the training sessions of his seniors and gleaned insights from them. To increase his stamina and strength, Ahmed encouraged his protégé to train with long-distance runners. The innovative approach of training with cross legs and incorporating a wide final step gave Chopra the speed needed for a smooth throw. Gradually progressing from two steps to three steps and eventually to five steps, the young athlete also mastered the landing technique.
The Ability to Blossom: The Guiding Hand of Gary Calvert and Kashinath Naik
During his triumphant journey, Neeraj Chopra had the privilege of working with Gary Calvert, helmed by Kashinath Naik. At that time, Calvert, an Australian coach who also served as the Chinese national javelin coach, played a key role in shaping Chopra’s abilities. Tragically, Calvert passed away from a heart attack in 2018, leaving a void in the athletic community. However, Naik, a former Commonwealth Games bronze medalist in javelin throw, remembers Chopra’s indomitable spirit and tremendous energy as a young prodigy, despite his thin frame.
Adopting German Expertise: The Uwe Hohn Era
Among Neeraj Chopra’s most respected mentors, the iconic German coach, Uwe Höhne, stands out as a true legend. Known as the only athlete in history to throw the javelin over a distance of 100 meters, Hawn’s expertise took Chopra to unprecedented heights. In 1984, Hahn surprised the world with an incredible throw of 104.8 meters in Berlin and etched his name in the history of athletics. After this remarkable achievement, changes were made to the javelin design to prevent the throw from going beyond the boundary of the stadium and to ensure a safe landing. Born in Neuruppin, former East Germany, Hohn won gold at the 1982 European Championships and the 1985 IAAF World Cup. However, his hopes of participating in the 1984 Olympics were dashed due to East Germany’s boycott of the Los Angeles Summer Games. Hawn’s influence on the world of javelin throw extends well beyond Chopra; He also coached China’s Zhao Qinggang, who won the gold medal at the 2014 Asian Games.
Growth and Progress: The Contribution of Uwe Hone
In 2018, Uwe Hohn worked tirelessly to refine Neeraj Chopra’s throwing technique, which was described by the German maestro as “wild”. Hone also expressed his belief that more support could have been provided by the Sports Authority of India and the Athletics Federation of India, especially during the challenging period of the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, he stressed the need for athletes to have access to appropriate dietary supplements.
The Road to Tokyo: Expert Guidance from Dr. Klaus Bartonitz

After Chopra’s historic victory at Tokyo 2020, Bartonitz expressed immense happiness while acknowledging the athlete’s remarkable achievement of securing India’s first individual Olympic gold medal in athletics.
