Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, who is known for his exceptional batting skills, was deeply affected by a single dismissal which haunted him for several days. His former teammate, Ajay Jadeja, revealed that Tendulkar was “so upset” about the incident that he “didn’t sleep” for the next few days. The incident involved the Zimbabwean fast bowler Henry Olonga, whose bowling had a deep impact on Tendulkar’s psyche.
Olonga’s exceptional bowling prowess troubled not only Tendulkar but also the star batting trio of Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid. Although Tendulkar later managed to avenge himself, the encounter became famous in the cricketing world. However, Olonga’s promising career was abruptly cut short after only 8 years of international cricket and 126 wickets. His decision to stand against the political powers of his country resulted in death threats and a warrant for his arrest. Faced with adversity, Olonga decided to go into exile and relocated to England, effectively ending his international cricket journey after playing 50 ODIs and 30 Tests.
After retiring from cricket in 2003, Olonga took some time to reflect on his future. Eventually he decided to pursue a career in singing. With his wife, he moved to Adelaide, Australia, where he became a stay-at-home father and a self-employed singer, while his wife worked as a teacher to support the family financially. Though Olonga gained some recognition when she participated in the TV show ‘The Voice’ in 2019, her singing career hasn’t rocketed to the heights of stardom.

The COVID-19 pandemic brought more challenges for Olonga, as he found himself out of work and had to rely on government relief schemes to make ends meet. He considers 2021 to be his toughest year so far. Currently, Olonga leads a quiet life in his second innings. He takes care of his children, dropping them off at school and back home, while also attempting to pursue a music career through a YouTube channel.

Despite the ups and downs Olonga has faced, her determination and resilience shine through. Her story serves as a reminder that even in the face of adversity, it is possible to pursue your passion and forge a new path in life.
