Volcanic Eruption in Hawaii: One of the world’s most active volcanoes, Kilauea in Hawaii, began erupting on Wednesday morning, the country’s volcano observatory reported. In a statement, they said, “On June 7, 2023, at approximately 4:44 a.m. HST, the US Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory detected a glow in Kilauea Summit webcam images indicating that a volcano within Halema’uma The explosion has begun.” U Crater in the summit caldera of Kilauea, within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Eruptions have dynamic initial phases. There are cracks in the base of Halema’uma’u crater that are producing lava flows that are visible on the crater floor thanks to webcam imagery. As eruptions continue, hazards will be reevaluated as activity is limited to Halema’uma’u.”
Only Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is experiencing current eruptions. The observatory claims it is in “constant communication” with park management. The internet is awash with timelapse videos of the beginning of the eruption as lava filled the volcano’s crater. Since Hawaii Volcanoes National Park published the video, it has garnered over ten thousand views and over a thousand likes. The caption read, “During the initial stages of the eruption lava fountains erupted up to 60 m (200 ft), reaching a regular height of 15 m (50 ft)!” The bottom of the crater was completely filled with lava within three hours, reaching a remarkable depth of 10 meters (33 ft). On the crater floor, the lava lake enclosed a vast area that was approximately 370 acres (150 ha).
The national park also reported that a dawn measurement revealed a sulfur dioxide emission rate of approximately 65,000 metric tons per day. “Over time, the height of the fountains gradually decreased and are currently between 4 and 9 meters (13 and 30 ft) high. It is still amazing to see!” They said.
The cultural significance of the volcanic eruption is profound but deeply personal to many Native Hawaiians. Others may honor the occasion with hula, or dancing, while others may chant or pray to their ancestors. However, the government urged people to maintain a respectful distance when they are around the site. Visitors coming to a national park on Hawaii’s Big Island to see the most recent eruption of Kilauea, one of the world’s most active volcanoes, were advised to show respect.
