New Delhi: Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Saturday wrote to President Draupadi Murmu expressing grief over the “unspeakable atrocities” on women in violence-hit Manipur and urged him to take steps to ensure peace in the northeastern state. Days after a video surfaced of women being paraded naked in the northeastern state, he said in the letter that the country cannot allow tribals in Manipur to be treated in a “barbaric manner”.
“Silence in the face of brutality is a terrible crime and hence I am compelled to write to you with a heavy heart and deep anguish at the ongoing violence in the state of Manipur today… I am deeply distressed and concerned about the escalating situation in Manipur… unspeakable atrocities and sexual exploitation of women…”
In the letter, Soren said Manipur has been “burning since two months, heart-wrenching videos are surfacing” and there is an “unprecedented decline in democratic governance” in the northeastern state. He urged the President to ensure justice for the people of Manipur and restore peace there.
