New Delhi: Actress Huma Qureshi, who is all set to play the hugely popular Indian chef Tarla Dalal in her upcoming biopic ‘Tarla’, comes from a family of foodies. His father started his first restaurant, Saleem’s, in 1977. Although Salim’s is a non-vegetarian restaurant, Qureshi’s father has introduced a vegetarian dish called ‘Batata Musallam’, taking inspiration from the upcoming biopic of Qureshi and as a tribute to Dalal’s creative genius.
Huma Qureshi said, “The journey of Tarla Dalal and Salim began in the 70s. Today, 50 years later, it fills my heart with pride to see these two worlds come together.”

He said, “After watching the trailer (of the film), my father decided to take inspiration from Tarla and introduce Salim’s popular dish Batata Musallam.” “The power of food and how it brings communities together is one of the most beautiful things about India.”

The late Tarla Dalal was famous for converting popular non-vegetarian dishes into meat-free versions owing to her vegetarian background. For example, their “Batata Musallam” is inspired by ‘Murgh Musallam’, where the gravy is the same but the chicken has been replaced with potatoes.

While promoting her film in Delhi, Qureshi along with her co-actor Sharib Hashmi went to her father’s restaurant to try his father’s version of ‘Batata Musallam’.
‘Tarla’ is a film based on the life of one of India’s most celebrated home cooks, Tarla Dalal, the first woman to have her own cookbook, her own cookery show and the only Indian to receive India’s prestigious Padma Shri award. Civilian award for his works.
