With artificial intelligence going mainstream faster than ever, AI-based chatbots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT are rapidly growing in popularity.
It’s also had a huge impact on the cryptocurrency industry, as a bunch of AI-related cryptocurrencies (and not related ones) soared in value in early 2023 as the AI craze was just gathering steam.
Now, a simplified approach to the popular Turing test is turning up some fascinating results showing just how far AI-based chatbots are going. But first, let’s get some clarification out of the way.
What is Turing Test?
originally called fake game Initiated by Alan Turing in the 1950s, the test aimed to detect a machine’s ability to exhibit intelligent behavior similar to or indistinguishable from a human.
For those unfamiliar – Alan Turing was an English mathematician, computer scientist, philosopher, cryptanalyst and logician. He had a special influence on the development of theoretical computer science.
However, in recent months, the Turing test has faced some scrutiny in its classic version. That’s when someone decided to gamify the model.
human or not? There is an interesting “game” where you chat with someone – an AI or a human and decide which was which at the end of the game. You have 2 minutes to ask as many questions as you want or have any conversation you like.
38% couldn’t tell the difference
We tried out the game ourselves and ran two examples of it. During the first one, we pretended we were bots to answer something more interesting, but it felt a bit obvious.
The second one got dark really quickly. We started with a friendly “hey” and our conversation partner quickly escalated the situation.
At that point, we thought we were talking to a bot once again, but it turned out it was a human. Lastly, one of the most popular concerns people have is that an AI will dominate humanity, so that might as well be obvious. We’ve got 1 of 2 right, and we’ll go with that.
However, it appears that 38% of users were unable to make a difference. The sample size is also quite significant – a reported 1.5 million users.
AI getting smarter?
To be perfectly honest, our experience with the game was somewhat patchy, and it felt like there are less than two minutes of conversation that would allow anyone to make an educated guess.
With that being said, AI-based language models are getting better.
ChatGPT is not the only example, as the competition is increasing by the day.
And with that, we have to ask ourselves – how will AI affect the crypto industry? While it’s anyone’s guess, we’ve already asked ChatGPT. Learn more in our piece:
