Indian skipper Rohit Sharma on Sunday expressed his disappointment over the wicket of Shubman Gill in the second session of Day-4 following India’s defeat against Australia in the final of the World Test Championship 2023. Gill looked set for a big knock in India’s fourth innings but was denied a shot after a controversial and widely debated decision on Day-4. Pacer Scott Boland dismissed Gill for an edge down the gully and all-rounder Cameron Green dived to his left to complete the one-handed stunner. However, the India openers stood their ground as the on-field umpires referred the matter to the television umpire. Later, the catch was declared clear, leaving Rohit and Gill in a state of disbelief.

Rohit said, “I am disappointed, the third umpire should have seen more replays, the decision was taken quickly, there should have been more camera angles especially in the final, there are more than 10 in IPL but not in ICC events.” In the conference after the match.
Television replays from several angles could not conclusively determine whether the catch was cleanly taken or not. The ball appeared to have touched the surface before it came under Green’s fingers. However, with the now soft-signal rule in place, the television umpire eventually ruled in favor of Green. Gill stood in disbelief for a moment as he slowly shuffled off the field of play. After Gill’s dismissal, the Indian team lost the wickets of Rohit and Cheteshwar Pujara. India started the fifth day on a tight note, looking like the Indian team was going for the target after being at the receiving end for the better part of the four days. He returned with the ball on the second day but his batting proved to be a major disappointment.
India had a disappointing opportunity to lift their maiden WTC title with Ajinkya Rahane and Virat Kohli with the bat. But, a game-changing over by Scott Boland, which saw him trap Virat for 49 and Ravindra Jadeja for a duck, heralded India’s downfall. Rahane was dismissed by Mitchell Starc for 46 while Srikar Bharat (23) was dismissed by Nathan Lyon. The Indian batting line-up failed to put up a fight, being bundled out for 234 in 63.3 overs and handing Australia their maiden WTC title. Lyon was one of the bowlers for Australia, taking 4/41. Boland took 3/46 while Starc got two wickets. Captain Pat Cummins got a wicket.
