The Arun Jaitley Stadium was filled with excitement as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) face off against Delhi Capitals in a crucial IPL 2023 match. The stadium was drenched in yellow as enthusiastic fans of MS Dhoni painted the stands to pay tribute to their beloved skipper. On 20 May, the atmosphere reached its climax when Dhoni won the toss, leading to the crowd chanting “Dhoni, Dhoni”.
Despite the deafening roar, Dhoni declared that CSK would bat first. However, amidst the din from the huge crowd, New Zealand commentator Danny Morrison found it impossible to hear Dhoni’s decision. Using a clever improvisation, Morrison resorted to sign language, gesturing to Dhoni to confirm his choice. Dhoni responded with hand gestures understanding the situation, ensuring that his decision was conveyed.

“We will bat first. I think that’s what we came here for. We are trying to win every match from the beginning. We are playing with the same XI. We don’t change much, we are happy with it. Are.” We have a balanced side. Day’s play and heat is one of the factors and it slows down as the match progresses, so we are batting first. I think that’s what we’re trying to do, we tell the youth as well. We have good games and bad games. We shouldn’t have a hangover and carry it over to the next game, so we need to get fresh and ready for the next one,” Dhoni explained his decision after winning the toss.
Speculations were rife on the possibility of this being Dhoni’s final IPL season. While the veteran cricketer didn’t make a definite statement, his immense popularity was evident at every venue in CSK this year. As the IPL season was nearing its end, Dhoni’s future was becoming uncertain.
After CSK’s last league match at Chepauk, Dhoni gave his team a spectacular lap of honour. During this spectacle, he distributed jerseys and tennis balls to the crowd, indicating that this could potentially be his farewell appearance.
CSK found themselves in a favorable position to qualify for the playoffs. Currently occupying the second spot in the standings with 15 points from 13 matches, their playoff hopes hinge on the result of their last league match against Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. A win in this crucial match will ensure their place in the next round. However, if CSK were to falter, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians would have a golden chance to overtake them in the standings.
