Keep Building: Binance Begins Running Bitcoin Lightning Network Nodes

Following its promise in May, crypto exchange giant Binance confirmed on Tuesday that it has started running multiple nodes on bitcoin’s Lightning Network.

The exchange plans to leverage a Layer-2 scalping solution to enable cheap bitcoin (BTC) deposits and withdrawals on its platform.

• Binance resolved to integrate Lightning after the explosion in popularity of memecoin/ordinals on bitcoin in May, which triggered a major blockchain rush and increased transaction fees by more than 1000%.
• Celebration interference Attempts to meet users’ deposit and withdrawal requests with exchanges such as Binance prompted the exchange to briefly suspend BTC withdrawals on May 7.
• In response, the firm increased transaction fees associated with bitcoin withdrawals (to ensure they would be processed faster by miners) and Gave Assurance Followers say the Lightning Network pullout is in the works.

To prevent such recurrence in future, our fees have been adjusted. We will continue to monitor on-chain activity and make adjustments as necessary.

Our team is also working on enabling BTC Lightning Network withdrawals, which will help in such situations.

• Lightning nodes allow bitcoin users to transfer funds between themselves instantly using network channels at virtually no cost. Users can choose to close their channel afterwards and settle their payments on bitcoin’s main blockchain, effectively baking multiple transactions into one.
• Tether CTO Paolo Ardoinio Praised move, while popular bitcoiner Odell noted Larger Lightning Channels have “clear product market fit” among major exchanges.
• Other exchanges including Bitfinex and Kraken have already integrated the Lightning Network for deposits and withdrawals.
• software intelligence firm MicroStrategy announced in May that it would bring a bitcoin wallet with lightning addresses to its corporate account holders this year.
