With the recent passing of my father came some emotional responsibility to finish the home where he and my mother had spent most of their lives together. Because most of my siblings and I ended up in Utah, my parents came out a lot more than we did back home. So, it’s almost surprising to see how they’ve amassed an impressive collection of smart home tech.
He also had several Amazon Echos, a Nest thermostat, Nest Protect smoke and CO2 detectors, a Nest camera, various smart outlets and lights, an Eero Mesh network, and even a smart door lock. My dad, always tech-savvy, founded this impressive ecosystem in his 80s.
beginning
His journey into the world of smart home tech began with the advent of Amazon’s Echo. As my mom’s eyesight began to deteriorate, she found solace in asking “Alexa” for the time or weather updates. It was lovely to see him treat Alexa like a person, asking questions in the most polite way possible.
Soon, my dad started incorporating other smart home technologies to aid him in his daily life. Voice-controlled lamps, for example, proved to be both convenient and a safety measure for navigating the house in the dark.
As he integrated more technology, his life became progressively easier. Smart Lock, in particular, was a godsend because of my dad’s health. He can unlock the front door with an app and share codes with trusted individuals when he can’t answer the door himself—a feature that proved invaluable on several occasions.
I couldn’t help but be proud of my parents for staying current with technology—they even had a Nintendo Wii and Switch, where they maintained their professional status at bowling. Carrying that bright pink bowling ball was a daily occurrence for my mom.
Continued Smart Home Advancements
Smart home technology is ubiquitous to me. I have adopted far more gadgets than my parents and cannot imagine life without them. As an early adopter, I appreciate the constant advances in technology, such as the 3Com Audrey from 2000 that I now have in my storage. However, seeing the impact this technology is having on my parents’ lives has given me a new appreciation for the importance of making these devices more accessible and user-friendly.

With Google, Apple Home, and Amazon constantly improving their user experience and the upcoming Matter standard promising better interoperability, I’m optimistic about the future of smart home technology. For me, “product experience” has moved beyond mere buzzwords describing user-technology interactions, evolving into a broader understanding of the lifestyle this technology enables us to enjoy.
Smart Home Technology and the Elderly Population
It’s surprising to see firsthand the potential benefits of smart home technology for the elderly population, a demographic that is projected to grow significantly. With the number of Americans aged 65 and older expected to nearly double from 52 million in 2018 to 95 million by 2060, it is important to consider how technology can improve their quality of life and promote independence Is. I love that smart home technology is already making our lives more convenient, more fulfilling and enjoyable not only because I’m also getting older. I need all the help I can get.
Now, as Mater streamlines interoperability between connected devices, it’s even more important for users of all ages and different levels of tech-savvy to be able to set up and enjoy the evolving benefits of smart home technology. it’s easy.
And it’s not just mater standards. I am also very excited about the growing role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the smart home. AI has the power to learn, adapt and make the technologies it integrates into more seamless and responsive. From smart speakers that learn our daily routines to security systems that can spot unusual activity, AI is making our homes safer, more comfortable and easier to manage.
For elderly populations, in particular, AI can help better manage their health with predictive analytics and proactive alerts, assist with daily tasks through voice-activated commands, and even That provides much-needed (but often lacking) social interaction with AI-powered companions. , AI can also help with safety by detecting falls, monitoring vital signs, and alerting healthcare providers or family members in case of anomalies.
give priority to experience
As we continue to push the boundaries of innovation, it is essential that priority is given to the comprehensive experience that technology can provide. My background in human factors, UX/UI and digital strategy has instilled this mindset in me. By placing exceptional product experience design at the heart of innovation, we can unlock the full potential of digital solutions and bring new technology and its benefits to a wider audience.
