Medovet, a medical device development company based in Cambridge, UK, has signed a distributor agreement with 20/20 Imaging, a division of Konica Minolta Healthcare America, to make its technology for regional anesthesia available to the US veterinary market .
The SAFIRA system – a new technology that turns regional anesthesia into a one-person procedure – was originally developed for human patient use in hospitals, but has great potential to extend its unique benefits to veterinary regional anesthesia has also been identified.
Medovet has partnered with 20/20 Imaging to engage with veterinary professionals in the United States to gain insight and understanding about the potential for SAFIRA technology to revolutionize veterinary regional anesthesia practice.
Following the positive response from the market, 20/20 Imaging is the first company to be appointed as the distributor for the SAFIRA system in the veterinary market and they are now providing veterinarians with the patient and diagnostic benefits provided by the technology in human health care. Will bring benefits. United States, focusing on regional anesthesia of small animals.
Current regional anesthesia procedures often require two operators, including a second operator (an assistant) who injects the anesthetic solution at the required pressure, depending on ‘feel’. This means that the anesthetic solution can be injected under high pressure which can increase the risk of nerve injury.
SAFIRA enables the veterinarian to control the injection himself, without the need for an assistant to control the syringe, and includes a pressure monitoring system that automatically stops the injection at a calibrated threshold. Another advantage is that the system enables a controlled release of the local anesthetic allowing a smaller amount of local anesthetic to be injected.
Bob Salzman, president of 20/20 Imaging, said: “This is a groundbreaking new technology for safe regional anesthesia and is unique in making it a one-person procedure and reducing reliance on the subjective ‘injection pressure feel’. 20/20 Imaging is proud to be the first appointed distributor to bring its unique benefits to the veterinary market and we look forward to making this exciting technology available to veterinary professionals across the US with our pioneering line of ultrasound solutions to to enable them to be distributed. Best care for your patients.”
Regional anesthesia is an important part of small animal care and is used in veterinary medicine for a number of reasons, including improving quality of life. The use of ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia has become more common practice today, with this technique – which can help provide a high degree of visibility for the clinician – increasingly being seen as the ‘gold standard’.
There are limitations and challenges that are not always present in adult human medical practice. For example, nerve injury is difficult to detect in animals. Small animals such as cats also have an increased sensitivity to local anesthetics compared to other species, necessitating the use of much lower maximum doses.
Stuart Thomson, Managing Director of Medovate, said: “With a significant number of regional anesthesia blocks completed in veterinary practice each year around the world, SAFIRA could play a significant role in the future of veterinary regional anesthesia practice. We are pleased to partner with 20/20 Imaging as our new distributor partner for SAFIRA in the veterinary market in the United States and we look forward to working with them to bring this exciting technology to the US-based veterinary Offered to professionals. This is a very exciting time for our company as we launch our SAFIRA product portfolio in the US veterinary sector.”
Developed in collaboration with consultant anesthesiologists in the UK National Health Service (NHS), SAFIRA has been successfully launched in the human healthcare sector in the USA, UK and Europe, Australia and New Zealand, Singapore and the Middle East.
Medovate has also partnered with Konica Minolta Healthcare America in the human healthcare sector to promote best practice within regional anesthesia in the United States and the Middle East. The partnership highlights the provision of ultrasound guided regional anesthesia and the SAFIRA device can be used in conjunction with Konica Minolta Healthcare America’s range of ultrasound solutions such as the SONIMAGE HS2 portable ultrasound system and the SONIMAGE MX1 platinum compact ultrasound system.
