Unlike today’s Babas, Neem Karoli Baba always stayed away from appearances. As long as he was alive, there was neither a tilak on his forehead nor a garland around his neck. Neem Karoli Baba believed in living life like a common man and did not allow anyone to touch his feet. If anyone tried to touch him, he would ask them to touch the feet of Lord Hanuman. Neem Karoli Baba, also known as ‘Maharaj-ji’ by his followers, is no more, but his devotees still revere him with the same reverence.
Kainchi Dham Pilgrimage – No One Ever Goes Empty Handed
Neem Karoli Baba’s ashram is at Kainchi Dham in Uttarakhand where people from all over the country come to meet him. Built on a hilltop, this temple has shrines for five deities, one of which is dedicated to Lord Hanuman. It is believed that one who comes here never returns empty handed.
Real Name: Laxmi Narayan Sharma
Neem Karoli Baba, before his retirement, was known as Laxminarayan Sharma. Born in a Brahmin family around 1900 in Akbarpur village of Uttar Pradesh, he attained self-realization at the age of barely 17.
How did Neem Karoli Baba get its name?
It is a matter of British time when Baba was traveling without a ticket in a first class compartment train. When TC came, he got down at the next station called Neem Karoli. Baba silently buried his tongs in the ground and sat under a tree, but to everyone’s surprise, the train did not move even after trying a lot. A local magistrate, who knew Baba, asked the railway official to apologize to Baba and seat him respectfully, and as soon as Baba re-boarded, the train started moving.
