Ripu Daman Beoli is an unsung hero in India who has turned garbage picking and cleanliness into the best thing India can do. The 35-year-old, who was born on November 15, 1987, started plogging in 2017 with the twin goals of tackling the waste crisis and maintaining fitness.
For those of you unfamiliar with the term plogging, it simply refers to the act of picking up litter while jogging. It combines the Swedish word ‘ploka up,’ meaning “to pick up,” and jogging.
He is also known as “Ploughman of India”. He used to be an ex-techie before becoming a social entrepreneur, marathon runner and environmentalist.
Mr. Bewley has organized more than 600 cleanliness drives at over 100 locations to raise awareness about this unique form of cleanliness and fitness creativity. Not only this, he has also worked with more than 150 schools and colleges.
His efforts to ‘clean’ India do not stop here. Below is a list of the works done by him:
- A remarkable 50-day, 50-city cleanliness drive was undertaken by Mr. Bewley in 2019.
- New technologies like the plastic fast and the trash workout
- He created a world record in 2020 by completing a non-stop plogging race of 50 kilometers in 9 hours 15 minutes in Kota, Rajasthan.
- Ride for Change: Advocating cycling as a zero-emission, zero-waste mode of transport during a five-week campaign in 2021.

“Ripudaman Bevli is following a new idea. He is practicing plogging. I had never heard of this term before. Plogging has been practiced in other countries, but Ripudaman ji has made it quite popular in India. Made popular, the Prime Minister said in the 57th episode of “Mann Ki Baat,” while addressing the citizens of the country.
