Some Mercedes owners will soon have artificial intelligence (AI) features in their vehicles. On Thursday (June 15), Mercedes-Benz announced that ChatGPT will be available as an option for the engines of some of their high-end vehicles. The trial run will start from June 16.
According to the manufacturer, approximately 900,000 vehicles are ‘MBUX’ compatible with ChatGPT. Once opted in, ChatGPT can be downloaded wirelessly via the Mercedes app or via voice command. Mercedes will observe how drivers interact with the technology over the course of three months.
The creator claims that ChatGPT will improve the system’s ability to provide answers that sound more natural. This enhancement will allow drivers to inquire about their destination. They ask “What’s for dinner?” Will be able to answer questions like Many voice commands, including those for heating the seats, are already understood by modern Mercedes vehicles. Microsoft’s cloud-hosted version of the ChatGPT chatbot is a key component of the deal. Microsoft has responded to Amazon.com’s efforts to bring the Alexa voice assistant to more cars by investing in OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT.
In a press release, Mercedes claimed that drivers would be able to interact with their vehicles, in addition to issuing commands with “Hey Mercedes”. In a separate blog post, Microsoft suggested that future plug-in integration could allow drivers to perform even more tasks, such as making restaurant reservations, purchasing movie tickets, and more. Mercedes claims that the results of the test program will inform future plans to expand the use of artificial intelligence to additional countries and languages. The company also mentions that the voice information is encrypted and stored in the Mercedes Cloud for analysis.
