Mighty Oak Medical, a medical device development company that specializes in creating and commercializing spinal technologies, announced a technology partnership with HP for 3D printed healthcare applications produced using HP’s Jet Fusion 5200 3D Printer.
Applications currently being built include Mighty Oak’s cornerstone product FIREFLY, a patient-specific pre-surgical planning and navigation platform. Mighty Oak has achieved FDA clearance and CE-mark for FIREFLY’s 3D printed medical model and 3D printed surgical guide.
Mighty Oak’s Firefly solution aims to increase accuracy and safety while reducing efficiency challenges in spinal fusion surgery by providing surgeons with the precision of millimeter concierge pre-surgical planning performed in 3D on a virtual representation of the patient’s spine. The 3D printed anatomical model and disposable guide are then used by surgeons to quickly and safely drill, tap and place pedicle screws, making spinal surgery more successful and less stressful. Now, with HP’s industrial multi jet fusion technology, FIREFLY is streamlining and reducing printing turnaround time, meaning more patients can benefit from an enhanced level of personalized care.
Heidi Frey, President of Mighty Oak Medical, said: “It was important to us to maintain our focus on the spine and develop new solutions that make surgical procedures safer and more efficient. We have always focused on 3D printed, patient-specific solutions. seen as an ideal way to achieve those two objectives, and now, thanks to HP’s 3D printing technology, the healthcare industry is undergoing massive transformation in terms of solutions, patient experience and new outcomes. Can provide 3D printed medical equipment.
Spinal fusion, a specific treatment option for fractures, deformities or instability in the spine, usually involves the use of pedicle screws to provide additional strength and support. However, if placed incorrectly, patients can suffer serious injury, including damage to the spinal cord. While robotic solutions exist to reduce errors associated with freehand pedicle screw insertion, this technology is expensive and has a learning curve to use. Mighty Oak’s familiarity with 3D printing technology resulted in the FIREFLY Complete Navigation System to streamline surgeons’ workflow and reduce screw placement time.
Since installing HP’s Jet Fusion 5200 printer directly on its factory floor, Mighty Oak Medical says it is experiencing unprecedented efficiency—all while improving replicability and consistency across pedicle screw placements—and 99.7% while achieving screw placement accuracy. These patient-specific guides eliminate intra-operative radiation exposure for both surgical staff and patients and the maintenance and technician costs associated with other solutions.
Greg Elfering, Head of US Go-to-Market, HP Personalization and 3D Printing, said: “Mighty Oak is currently leading the way for a more advanced medical device and orthopedic industry with its Firefly solution.” We are excited to partner with Mighty Oak to maximize the benefits of K’s 3D printing solutions. By reducing costs, enabling personalization, and improving the efficiency and accuracy of patient care, Mighty Oak and HP are demonstrating how the power of innovation can positively impact patients and the healthcare industry.
