Former Pakistani cricket captain Salman Butt recently discussed about the captaincy of MS Dhoni and legendary Pakistani cricketer Imran Khan. According to Butt, Imran faced a paucity of resources during his tenure as the 1992 World Cup winner, but managed his available resources effectively. Dhoni, on the other hand, is widely recognized as one of the greatest leaders in cricket history, being the only captain to win the ICC World Cup (2011), the ICC World T20 (2007), and the ICC Champions Trophy (2013). .
Dhoni ended India’s long wait for a second World Cup title in 2011, while Imran captained Pakistan’s inaugural win in the tournament in 1992, which also marked their final tournament. Butt admitted that it would be unfair to compare the captaincy abilities of these two cricket legends.
Butt pointed out that Dhoni had the advantage of leading a strong batting line-up during his captaincy tenure, while Imran only had himself and Javed Miandad as exceptional batsmen when leading the Asian giants. Butt emphasizes the significant disparity in resources and avoids making direct comparisons. Nevertheless, he lauded both the captains’ talent and ability to make astute decisions. Butt highlighted that Imran was an assertive leader, which was evident from his gestures on the field, while Dhoni was less assertive.
“I don’t want to compare, because there was a big difference in their resources. But they were both brilliant captains and decision makers. They would fully support their players. As can be seen from their gestures, Imran bhai was very vocal. Dhoni was not vocal at all,” Butt said in the video.
Dhoni, who retired from international cricket a few years ago, recently led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to their fifth Indian Premier League (IPL) title. CSK emerged victorious against defending champions, Gujarat Titans (GT) in the 16th season of the cash-rich league.
Dhoni had a remarkable career, which included 90 Tests, 350 One Day Internationals (ODIs) and 98 T20Is for Team India.
