India’s telecom giant Reliance Jio is reportedly in talks with Elon Musk’s Tesla to form a 5G alliance. According to sources, as mentioned in Financial Express (Via ET Telecom)Mukesh Ambani-led Jio is likely to form a ‘captive private network’ with the Texas-based EV giant.

On condition of anonymity, a Jio executive revealed to the above publication that the company is reaching out to leaders in various sectors, including automobiles, manufacturing, healthcare, to examine use cases powered by Jio’s infrastructure and network. According to sources, the talks are still in the initial stage. It could take a more consolidated shape if (and when) Tesla leaves China for India to set up a Gigafactory in the country.
Jio’s captive private network will manage Tesla’s critical operations at lightning speed while handling its other services including production, automation, connected car solutions, etc. But then crony capitalism in India is built on the ‘identity’ model. If you have the relevant ‘identity’ (acquaintance) you will also have access to the PM. And currently the best (and only) ‘identifiers’ with the PM seem to be Adani and Ambani. After Hindenburg cracks down on Adani, it will take ages before the 5G revolution catches up to full speed. Meanwhile, Mukesh Ambani and Akash Ambani-led Reliance Jio has an edge over any (and all) competitors in India. Jio has spent Rs 88,078 crore to acquire spectrum in the following bandwidths for the next 20 years – 700MHz, 800MHz, 1800MHz, 3300MHz and 26GHz bandwidth. The company has already launched its services in major metros.
Next stop – Tesla.
