Sao Paulo: Brazilian football star Neymar was fined more than $3.3 million (Rs 27.1 crore) for violating local environmental regulations during renovations at his mansion in the town of Mangaratiba outside Rio de Janeiro. Mangratiba City Hall said in a statement on Monday night that it had issued four fines totaling about 16 million Brazilian reals after Neymar was accused of illegally building an artificial lake at his mansion.
“One of the dozens of violations observed on the player’s property is the initiation of unauthorized construction that requires environmental controls; encroaching on the course of a river and diverting it without permission; moving rock and sand; Felling of vegetation without permission and non-compliance of the ban,” the statement said.
A City Hall document obtained by The Associated Press states that the latter allegation relates to Neymar’s decision to swim in the artificial lake, despite the fact that local officials forbade him from the area due to environmental consequences. It added, “Because of that, the athlete was fined again.”
