Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, starring Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., Emily Blunt, Matt Damon and others, has made a grand opening in India. The film has collected around Rs 13 – 13.50 crore nett on the first day based on early estimates and this means it has achieved the biggest opening day for a Hollywood film in India this year, ahead of films like Fast X and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1. These collections have mainly come from metros and big cities, but that does not mean that it has not performed well outside them as cinemas in smaller towns have also brought in decent footfalls.
Oppenheimer gives biggest opening to any Hollywood film in India this year
Oppenheimer’s opening day box office collections come despite an unfavorable film genre and some stiff competition from Barbie and the big holdover release Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1 which is a certified hit in India. The advance booking for the film is excellent and the spillover demand is not only for the weekdays but also for the second weekend. While Oppenheimer leads in India and some South Asian countries, Barbie leads by a wide margin in all other film regions.
Oppenheimer has opened to a stellar worldwide box office
Oppenheimer packed a solid punch in its North America preview. It collected around $10.5 million from previews alone, which means the opening weekend collections could be around or above $75 million. The weekend global collections are expected to be around $150 million which is staggering for a film of this kind. The opening weekend itself has ensured that the film is a successful run for Universal.
