Christopher Nolan’s oppenheimer was released in theaters on July 21, 2023. The film opened to positive response worldwide and box office collections also reflected in the same. In India too, the first three days were almost housefull. However, controversy arose over a particular scene in the film. The scene featured Florence Pugh in a nude avatar. Soon, the scene was censored, and the scene now features Florence covered in a CGI black dress.
In the sequence, Cillian Murphy’s character, Robert Oppenheimer, confronts his former romantic partner, the psychiatrist and medical professional, Jean Tatlock, portrayed by Florence. During the scene, they discuss being naked; However, amendments have been made for Indian audiences by using a computer-generated black gown to cover Florence’s body.
The makers of the film decided to add the CGI black dress to avoid any problems with the Central Board of Film Certification in India. And that’s why it got a U/A rating from CBFC, while the film is R-rated in the US. Soon, netizens reacted to the changes made in the scene for the Indian audience. To keep an eye.
The only VFX used in Oppenheimer was to cover Florence Pugh in the sex scene for the release in India.

People in India are getting agitated and angry over the nudity of the two Manipuri daughters and at the same time expecting the nudity on Florence Pugh… women being women.

Be it men or any system, we still want to have authority over how women should look and dress. The fact that there is a computer generated image of Oppenheimer around Florence Pew body says a lot about the mindset, animalistic behavior of human beings and backward conservatism in India. 1/1 pic.twitter.com/DGEhz8ybSG

Sex scenes, nudity? In #oppenheimerfilm, When? that’s all i saw #florencepugh In two very strange costumes – CGI work, in two very brief scenes, because in India even adults are treated like children. No sex please we are Indians!!

Reportedly, the CBFC asked for only two changes to be made in the film. The board asked the producers to add anti-smoking messages wherever necessary, and the word a**hole was muted and removed from the subtitles.
On the other hand, the film faced criticism in India for a particular scene where Murphy and Pugh scuffle while reciting verses from the Bhagavad Gita. Meanwhile, the film clashed with Greta Gerwig. barbieStarring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling at the box office.
