Team India’s recent struggles, with a crushing defeat to Australia in the final of the World Test Championship, have raised concerns about the state of the dressing room. One of the most controversial decisions was the exclusion of top-ranked Test bowler Ravichandran Ashwin from the final playing XI. Now Ashwin has highlighted the worrying state of the Indian team.
In an interview with The Indian Express, Ashwin was asked about seeking help from his teammates during tough times. His response painted a grim picture of the modern cricket era, saying that teammates are now more like colleagues due to cutthroat competition for places in the team.
Gone are the days when teammates used to be friends, supporting each other on and off the field. Ashwin pointed out the key difference, insisting that players are only focused on furthering their careers and outshining their peers. There seems to be no time or desire to foster camaraderie within the team.
Ashwin lamented the lack of shared experiences and mutual understanding among players, which he believes enriches the game of cricket. The ability to understand teammates’ techniques and appreciate their journey contributes to the team’s collective growth. However, this aspect is severely lacking in the present scenario. Players no longer help each other, creating a sense of alienation within the team.
While players have the option of taking outside help from coaches or professionals, Ashwin highlighted that cricket is ultimately a self-taught sport. Relying on yourself is key to overcoming challenges and improving skills, but it’s disheartening to see the support and camaraderie among teammates dwindle.

Ashwin’s candid revelation throws light on the bitter reality of Team India’s dressing room. Cutthroat competition for places in the side has changed the dynamics between players, with friendship giving way to professional rivalry. Each player’s isolated journey can hinder the overall development and success of the team. It serves as a wake-up call to re-evaluate the importance of fostering a supportive and cohesive environment within the dressing room, where players can rely on each other for guidance and inspiration.

As Team India goes through this challenging phase, addressing the concerns raised by Ashwin could prove to be the key in restoring the team’s cohesion and resilience. It is only through collective support and shared experiences that the team can overcome adversity and regain its winning form.
