Scientists have just discovered the realm of octopi. They returned with discoveries.
on one deep ocean On an expedition to Costa Rica, researchers used a robotic submersible to capture footage of previously unknown seamounts, and found they are nearly teeming with extraterrestrial life. Led by the Schmidt Ocean Institute, an ocean research organization, the mission visited a little-known octopus nursery – where groups of female octopi congregate and guard their valuable eggs.
The researchers also found an entirely new octopus nursery, the third known to science.
Oceanographer Jyotika Virmani, executive director of the Schmidt Ocean Institute, said: “The discovery of a new active octopus nursery 2,800 meters (more than 9,000 feet) below the ocean’s surface in Costa Rican waters proves that there is still a lot to know about our ocean.” There’s something to be learned.” in a statement.
Peeping into unknown depths often yields discoveries or unique footage of an underwater world still quite alien to us. Alan Leonardi, former director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Office of Ocean Exploration and Research, previously told Mashable, “We know so little about the deep ocean that if anyone is doing something unusual out there, they can find something new. ” ,
Interestingly, the newly found nursery, shown in the June 2023 images below, is closer to the lower temperature hydrothermal vent, a place where warm or hot mineral-rich seawater flows from the Earth’s crust. This suggests that some octopus species intentionally lay their eggs around these holes. (Another octopus nursery called the Dorado Outcrop Nursery is also located near a vent, and researchers have observed eggs hatching there as well.)
