tenth anniversary edition of The Digital Health Summer School will celebrate the milestones of the past decade in developing clinical informatics and digital health leaders, as well as reflect on what lies ahead.
The conference program and education sessions will explore what skills, training, professional competencies and support are needed to become effective digital leaders in an NHS facing the pressures of drastic change, a large workforce and demands.
The Digital Health Summer School is an annual two-day residential program dedicated to bringing together NHS CCIOs, CIOs and CNIOs and the next generation of digital health leaders. Over 50 scholarship places have been awarded to future digital leaders and aspiring leaders from underrepresented groups.
The Summer School 2023, taking place at the University of Birmingham on 27-28 July 2023, will discuss key challenges facing current and future digital health leaders, including the topics of ICS, AI, EPR, cyber security, leadership development and diversity.
The keynote speaker for Summer School 2023 will be Richard Murray, CEO of the King’s Fund, setting the national picture and context on policy, politics and money; and Vin Diwakar, Clinical Director for Digital Transformation NHS England, who will outline the national priorities on digital and data.
They will join a brand new team of digital leaders from NHS England: John Quinn, newly appointed CIO; Melanie Isles, Interim CCIO; and Helen Balsdon Interim CNIO.
To help celebrate the accomplishments of the past decade, a panel of past and present leaders from the CCIO/CIO/CNIO Network – Joe McDonald (former CCIO President), Eddie Byrne (former CIO President), Lisa Emery (current CIO President) ), Daniel Ray (Former CIO President), Dr. Y Keong Wong (Former CCIO President), James Reid (Current CCIO President), Ramandeep Kaur (Current CCIO Vice President), Sarah Hanbridge (Current CNIO President), Ayesha Rahim (Current CCIO Vice President) – which will reflect on the past, present and future of digital leadership.

With one eye firmly on the next ten years, over two days of summer schools past and present leaders from the CCIO/CIO/CNIO network will invite delegates to help draft a declaration that outlines the future of digital health leadership. Will provide a blueprint for NHS.

The Shuri Network, the campaigning group for BAME women in health tech, makes a much-welcomed return to summer schools, with a session dedicated to the Shuri Fellows’ experience. The topic of diversity in women will be further discussed in the Digital Leadership session on the second day.
Delegates will have nearly 30 breakout sessions to choose from over two days, including: Spotlight series sessions focused on the experiences of new CCIOs, CIOs, CNIOs, AHPs and future digital leaders.
Partner sessions will be run around professional development and competencies: NHS Providers, Florence Nightingale Foundation, Clinical Informatics Faculty, Federation of Informatics Professionals, BCS Health and Care, Shuri Network and Public Records Standards Body.
Other breakout sessions will include masterclass case studies with network sponsors, AI deep dives, cyber security, patient digital communication; EPR convergence; learning from failures; Next steps on clinical security roles, and shared health and care records.
